How Long does it Take to get a Loft Conversion?

Thinking about getting a loft conversion but not sure what is involved and how long it will take? Below are the five stages of getting a loft conversion, from planning all the way through to build and aftercare.

Stage 1

Design & Discovery

This is where your vision comes to life. We begin by getting to know you, your home, and how you want to use your new space. Whether you're after a master suite with a sleek en suite, a light-filled office, or a quiet retreat, we'll help you explore what's possible.

Working closely with our architect, we bring your ideas to life on paper. During this stage, we’ll explore design features like:

  • Rear Dormers for full-height living space

  • Specialist roof windows, like Velux Cabrio balcony-style windows, triple Velux combinations, or flood casement windows

  • Custom layouts that work with your home’s structure

We collaborate with you to ensure every element feels right, from functionality to finishes. This design stage also sets the groundwork for planning permissions, if needed.

Stage 2

Planning & Preparation

Once the design is agreed, we move into the technical planning phase. This is where the detail comes in. We work closely with our architect, structural engineer, building control, and you, to create a fully compliant, buildable plan.

Here’s what happens:

  • Structural calculations are carried out to meet building regulations

  • Planning permission or permitted development checks are submitted

  • Building control is notified and involved from the start

  • A full project schedule is outlined and confirmed

You’ll get a clear understanding of timescales, stages and what’s involved, all before a single tool is lifted.

Stage 3

Main Build Phase

Now the real transformation begins. This is when your loft goes from empty space to a fully structured new room or entire floor.

During this stage, we:

  • Carry out all structural work, including steels and joists

  • Build Dormers, gables, or lift the roof if needed

  • Fit roof windows and make the space weatherproof

  • Install insulation and plasterboard to building control standards

  • Coordinate with building inspectors at key stages

It’s a busy time, but we keep the process smooth and keep you updated at every stage. We also take care to keep disruption to a minimum in the rest of your home.

Stage 4

Second Fix & Interior Finishing

This is where your new space really starts to feel like part of your home. We start to prepare your new space to be decorated and made into the end product.

We’ll:

  • Install electrics, plumbing and heating (the "second fix")

  • Fit bathrooms, if part of the build

  • Plaster the walls and ceilings to a high finish

  • Fit internal doors, skirting and architraves

  • Install any requested extras like Velux blinds or lighting features

Everything is completed to the agreed design, right down to the smallest detail. We’ll even help you choose final finishes if you’re unsure.

Stage 5

Final Sign-Off & Aftercare

We don’t just hand over the keys and disappear. Once the work is done, we walk through everything with you to make sure you’re 100% happy. If there’s anything that doesn’t feel quite right or anything you’d like adjusted, we’re happy to sort it.

We take pride in maintaining an ongoing relationship with every customer, and we’re only ever a call away.

Plus, every project comes with our 10-year guarantee, so you can relax knowing your new loft is built to last.

We’ll also take care of the finishing touches:

  • Fit Velux blinds if required

  • Talk you through using any new features (e.g., electric roof windows)

  • Provide completion certificates from building control
